While working with youth from these slums, Saath realized that youth (18-30 years) from slums need 1) emotional and psychological support and 2) a platform to share, innovate, and explore. So, SAATH has established "youth spaces" that are managed and run entirely by community youth. Group leaders, from existing SAATH programs such as UMEED, carry out awareness drives in their areas, such as, road shows, street theatre and mostly word of mouth to get youth interested. Each member pays a nominal fee and becomes part of self-governed "team" that carries out activities related to sports, culture, excursions and other forms of entertainment.
In addition, the groups organize meetings to discuss health (HIV / AIDS, reproductive and general), environmental sustainability, civic duty and citizenship, and education. For governance, the members have monthly meetings to manage finances, share best practices and counsel one another.
Your contributions will go directly to the Youth Spaces program to help fund new youth spaces, marketing campaigns and enrolment into various extracurricular programs. For example, a donation of Rs. 10,000 would go to sponsor an awareness seminar. For more information, please contact Paresh at paresh@saath.org. |
