The artisan communities of rural Gujarat are the creators of unique variety of crafts. In spite of this, a lack of quality raw material, access to credit for raw material and market intelligence amongst them means that they are failing to develop profitable livelihood practices. Our focus is to introduce entrepreneurial know-how, such as management accounting and marketing, into the practices of selected artisan groups in rural Gujarat. The off-shoot is the creation of awareness and increased reach of a wonderful, unique and diverse craft by extremely talented artisans.
At the heart of project is a local level network or federation of artisans and the Raw Material Bank. Artisans creating Patola Saris from mulberry silk require heavy investment. Access to credit and quality raw material is the mission of the Raw material bank. It is managed and operated by the village level groups in with support from SAATH. Artisans have increased income and new raw material banks have been launched for wool and cotton artisans.
