India's poor are not considered to be credit worthy. But the urban and rural poor require banking services to improve their lives. As such, Saath provides financial services to those at the bottom of the pyramid. Started in Ahmedabad's slums under humble beginnings, the Microfinance Institute now provides savings and loans to nearly 10,000 people. The focus is to institutionalize increased reach and accessibility. Similarly, Saath is providing banking services to rural artisans in Gujarat's villages. Through self-help groups, federations and material banks, villagers are monetizing their traditional livelihoods.
